Reopening An Old Claim

You were denied years ago. That case may not be over.

You applied. You were denied. You moved on. But you may still qualify — and you have the right to reopen a closed claim.

Open Mon–Fri, 8am–7pm ET. A real person — never a recording.

When an old case can be reopened

  • Within 12 months of your original denial — for any reason at all.
  • Within 4 years (2 years for SSI) — if you can show "good cause," like new medical evidence.
  • At any time — for limited reasons including fraud or a clerical error.

Even if reopening isn't possible, you can almost always file a new application. And the years that have passed often strengthen your case — more medical history, more proof of how long your condition has lasted.

Fighting for years, headed to a hearing

He couldn't do his old job anymore, and SSA kept saying no.

After years of fighting SSA on his own, David hired Fortis to represent him at his hearing. His body simply couldn't handle the labor-intensive work he'd always done. Fortis presented his case to the judge and he was approved that same day.
